What is Krill oil?
What makes it unique?
Superba Krill oil's natural combination and concentration of four key nutrients provide an excellent opportunity for differentiation in the supplement market.
OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS EPA & DHA
These essential fatty acids are one of the most researched nutrients, with a wide range of health benefits for your heart, eyes, liver and brain.
PHOSPHOLIPIDS
Phospholipids help omega-3s integrate into the cell membranes and may be a better delivery form to the body’s organs than other marine oils.
CHOLINE
Choline is an essential nutrient vital for many body functions such as nerve signaling, liver and muscle functioning. Our body can't make enough, therefore we must obtain it from our diet.
ASTAXANTHIN
This natural antioxidant gives krill oil its beautiful red color. It also protects the oil from oxidation, eliminating the need to add preservatives.
Meeting Consumer Needs
Easy to swallow
Phospholipids make krill oil’s omega-3s more bio-efficient and stable. This allows for smaller capsules that are easier to swallow.
No fishy aftertaste
Krill oil’s phospholipid-bound omega-3s mix well with stomach contents, preventing fishy aftertaste and other unpleasant digestive issues.
Bio-efficient
Phospholipid-bound omega-3 and choline are more efficiently incorporated into the body's cells and vital organs.
About Aker BioMarine
Aker Biomarine krill fishery in Antarctica is regarded as the world's most sustainable reduction fishery by the SFP, and all our products are MSC and Friends of the Sea certified sustainable.
Aker Biomarine has been investigating the effects of krill oil on human health for over a decade with several studies documenting the health benefits and efficiency of Superba Krill in raising levels of omega-3 and choline.
More Than Just an Ingredient Supplier
One of the most sustainable fisheries in the world
The Aker Biomarine krill fishery operates in Area 48, just below the tip of South America. This fishery is regarded by independent NGOs as one of the most sustainable in the world, with responsible and environmental operations at the core.
MSC Certified
MSC certification guarantees that the marine resources are harvested using sustainable methods and that all products are traceable throughout the supply chain. Aker BioMarine was the first krill fishery to receive the MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) certification in 2010, and received a re-certification in 2015 for another five years.
Unique SFP 'A' Rating
For the fifth year in a row, the Aker BioMarine Antarctic krill fishery received an “A” rating for its well-managed fishery from the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP). The independent report states that the fish stocks are listed in “very good condition,” and the krill fishery in the Atlantic Southern Ocean is once again singled out as being particularly well-managed.
Eco-Harvesting
Eco-Harvesting is a proprietary technology, developed by Aker BioMarine to harvest krill in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way. The trawling system is continuously submerged and a hose gently brings the krill on board the vessel, reducing the risk of by-catch of other species to almost zero. Check out the video below to see this technology in action.
Precautionary catch limit
The Antarctic Krill Fishery operates only within a small area of the Southern Ocean, called Area 48. Within this area, the CAMMLR (Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources) has set a catch quota of 1% of the total biomass which makes it one of the most precautionary in the world, ensuring the sustainable replenishment of stocks. In comparison, many other fisheries are considered sustainable with a catch quota of 10%.
