What is brewer’s yeast?

As the name suggests, brewer’s yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) is utilized in the beer brewing process. Interestingly enough, the same yeast, albeit a slightly different strain, is also used to make bread. In brewing the microorganism is responsible for turning sugar into alcohol. After this process is completet, the yeast is extracted and deactivated, but not before it has ingested many valuable vitamins and minerals.

A nutritional powerhouse

Brewer’s yeast is a rich source of essential nutrients, including B vitamins, proteins, and minerals. A tablespoon (15g) of brewer’s yeast contains:

- 60 % of the recommended daily dose of Thiamin (Vitamin B1)
- 20 % of the required Riboflavin (B2)
- 20 % of the required Niacin (B3)
- Up to 40% of the daily dose of Chromium
- 30% of the required Selenium

On top of that, the same dose of brewer’s yeast contains 7 grams of protein, including all 9 essential amino acids.

How to use Brewer's Yeast?

Brewer's yeast provides a convenient way for consumers to implement the benefits and nutrients of yeast into their everyday lives. Due to its slightly bitter or tart taste, it is usually mixed with other food items or taken as a supplement. Brewer's yeast can be mixed into milk or shakes, sprinkled on salads or cereal, added to baked goods, or taken directly in the form of capsules. Beyond providing vital nutrients, it can also serve as a protein source for those following a vegan or vegetarian diet.
